OpenAI offers free ChatGPT Go for one year to all users in India

OpenAI is offering its ChatGPT Go plan free of charge for one year to users in India who sign up during a limited promotional period that began on November 4. This move aims to expand OpenAI’s presence in one of its most important markets. The announcement was made recently by OpenAI; however, the company did not clarify how long the special offer will be available. Current ChatGPT Go subscribers in India are also eligible for the 12-month free access.
Priced at less than $5 per month, ChatGPT Go was launched in India in August as OpenAI’s most budget-friendly paid subscription. The service quickly expanded, first to Indonesia and later to 16 more countries across Asia. India, with its population of over 1 billion internet users and more than 700 million smartphone owners, represents a crucial market for AI companies.
OpenAI’s Expanding Footprint and Competitive Landscape
In August, OpenAI opened its New Delhi office and began building a local team to strengthen its operations. Earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that India is the company’s second-largest market after the United States. Nevertheless, monetizing ChatGPT’s paid solutions has been challenging in India. For instance, the app generated just $3.6 million in in-app purchases from over 29 million downloads in 90 days leading up to August, as reported by Appfigures.
ChatGPT Go offers 10 times more usage compared to the free version, enabling users to generate responses, create images, and upload files more extensively. Additionally, it provides enhanced memory for more tailored and personalized responses. Nick Turley, vice president and head of ChatGPT, highlighted the rapid adoption and creativity of Indian users since the initial rollout. He expressed his excitement about what users will build and achieve using these advanced tools.
India’s Role in the AI Ecosystem
OpenAI is not alone in targeting India’s vast, youthful user base. Rivals like Perplexity and Google are also introducing special offers. For example, Perplexity partnered with Airtel to provide free Perplexity Pro subscriptions to the telecom’s 360 million users. Similarly, Google launched a complimentary one-year AI Pro plan for Indian students.
OpenAI is set to host its DevDay Exchange developer conference in Bengaluru on November 4, where India-specific announcements are anticipated. The company reports that millions of Indian users interact with ChatGPT every day, making the country one of its fastest-growing markets.
> Excited for our first DevDay Exchange event in India 🇮🇳 on November 4. Ahead of that, we have some exciting updates coming for India users over the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!
