WhatsApp adds passkey protection to end-to-end encrypted backups

WhatsApp launches passkey support for encrypted backups
WhatsApp is introducing a new way to access encrypted backups with passkey support. If you ever lose your device, you will be able to use fingerprint, face recognition, or the screen lock code from your previous device to access your WhatsApp backup. This new method provides a more secure and accessible solution for users, making it easier to restore chat history.
Evolution of WhatsApp encrypted backups
For a long time, WhatsApp did not offer an encryption layer for chat backups. This changed in 2021, when Meta enabled end-to-end encryption for backups, allowing users to protect their data with strong passwords or a 64-character encryption key. Both of these methods required you to remember your backup password or keep the encryption key available during the restore process. However, many users found this process cumbersome or could lose access if they forgot their credentials.
How passkeys simplify backup restoration
With the new passkey function, you don’t have to worry about remembering a complex password or storing a long encryption key. Instead, passkey technology lets you use biometric authentication like a fingerprint, your face, or the screen lock code from your previous phone. As a result, restoring a backup becomes much more convenient and secure.
WhatsApp, which recently surpassed 3 billion active users, announced that this feature would be rolling out to users over the next several weeks and months. Therefore, you should watch for updates to see when it is available in your app. To activate encrypted backups or check for the passkey option, go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup on your WhatsApp app. Using passkeys will make securing and restoring your backed-up chats easier than ever before.
